I was introduced to Christian Science when I was in my late twenties. Prior to this, I taught English in South Africa, worked as an Outward Bound instructor in Zimbabwe, a commercial fisherman in Alaska and was a ski bum in Colorado.
A friend once said, "You know... we talk about what we're going to do for work, where we're going to live and who we're going to do it with, but no one asks the question of why we're doing any of it." He was right. I decided while I'm trying to figure out career, home and relationships, I'll start asking the question of "What's this all about?"
Throughout my travels, when I met a person of faith who seemed to have an answer to this question for themselves, I would ask them questions. I lived with a Pentacostal minster, befriended an Anglican priest, spent a night with Muslims on their annual pilgrimage, spoke to Scientologists on the sidewalk, my brother's Evangelical Christian friends or Hare Krishnas in the airport.
I was a "weary wanderer, athirst in the desert" and a "sincere seeker of Truth" (S&H 570). Not knowing I could pray for God's direction, I flitted from adventure to adventure until I landed in Iowa to study creative writing. This is where I was introduced to Christian Science.
A few days after being given a copy of Science & Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, I found myself snowed in an airport in Chicago. What was to be a four-hour flight grew to a 36-hour delay and with nothing else to do but read the Christian Science textbook, I read the book cover-to-cover at the airport and this set me on a journey of spiritual discovery.
I received an undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University (SMU) and a masters degree in business administration from Babson College. I've worked in the Christian Science Movement for the better part of twenty years. Before moving into the full-time public practice, I worked as a Christian Science nurse, at a Christian Science camp and at The Christian Science Monitor.
I'm married, live in New York City and have two grown children.
